Life Decisions
So I need encouragement.

I signed up to be a Mary Kay consultant. I'm really excited about it. I figure:

A) if it works out I'll make enough money to quit my day job and be a stay at home mom once Billy and I have kids,

B) If it doesn't work out I didn't lose that much and I had fun.

I'm getting a lot of negative feedback from my friends and family. If you are one of these people, please don't comment. But if you have something nice, encouraging, or both, to say to me, please leave a comment.

I'm feeling kind of discouraged.

Thanks. :)

I don't know what Mary Kay is, but trying never hurt anybody - if you want to do it, do it and feel proud! Others should support you in your choice - it's up to you after all! You are not hurting anybody!! So I don't really see why the need to be negative - if it's like being an Avon lady (cosmetics) then the success very much depends on the get up and go of the individual and their enthusiasm - sounds like you've got that, so ignore them, and go for it!!

Mary Kay is a line of skin care and cosmetics.

And thank you so much for the words of encouragement. :)

Like I said on the phone, its mostly negative to the company and not you (I know I know, I told you this a lot and i'm sure your getting sick of hearing it). I know at least for me, I'm worried for you, I just don't want you get sucked and then find you self in trouble, but! Regardless of this being slightly negative so far, I am happy for you! It's not me trying to talk you out of it, just giving you a heads up, but I really hope it works out well for you! I know if anyone can do it you can! And you might even get a car from them! (if they still do that)...(and it might be hooker red or bright pink, but it's still a free car!) I really do have faith in you, to keep your head above the water and know your getting pulled under and decide to get out of the water before you actually drown if things go badly.

I think you should definitely try it. You're still working at the other job and like you said this could work out in your favor in the end. :)

Good luck!

Dude! I don't use MK for skin care anymore, but I use their eye shadows, lipsticks, etc. And especially their face blotters. I *love* their face blotters. I was wondering who I'd get as a replacement MK consultant in Philly who wouldn't want to shove doing parties down my throat... because I have no in-person friends in Philly, other than you. :) (I totally get that having parties is a way to build your business.)

(Allow me to boggle again at meeting you on the plane!)

Are you getting a consultant sales web site up and running? If so, send me the link, so I can bookmark it.

Also, I did Creative Memories for about 1 1/2 years, and my mom's a Longaberger consultant, so if you ever need help in trolling for sales, getting your name out there, etc., let me know. Craft shows are *big* in generating leads. Even if MK isn't crafty, I always saw an MK consultant at the craft shows I did Creative Memories at.

And do a Yahoo Groups search on "Mary Kay consultant." There are *lots* of MK consultant support groups there that are open to consultants that aren't in someone's downline. You'll get ideas on how to build your business. There's also some general home party sales Yahoo Groups that are good too, in getting ideas on how to build your business there too. The only downside is... I got *so* many ideas, I went completely ADD, wanting to try them all, so I started them all at once, and never focused on any one or two ideas to see what really worked or didn't. :D

I know MK has a quota. Don't feel bad or ashamed if you have to send out an email to friends and family, asking them for their help in meeting your quota for a month... even if you have to give them your consultant discount. I don't know if MK gives you any leeway if you miss a quota for a period, but I know with CM, at the time, I think I had to start over as a new consultant if I missed my quarterly quota. Like buying a new kit and everything. At the time, their quota was $400/retail a quarter. That's why I had to drop out. I couldn't generate the business to meet the quota. You should be fine with MK... everyone needs makeup! :)

I go back and forth on if I should try direct sales again once I get back in Philly. I've got a feeling though that my direct sales business is going to be selling crap on eBay until I get my stuff liquidated out.

I've got uber email backup on my Gmail account--I'm actually changing email addresses in general, because I've grown way tired of how Gmail threads messages together in their web mail--but I'll email you my Philly snail mail address, so you can put me on your mailing list for catalogs or whatever. If you're getting a consultant/shopping web site, yeah, just send me the link, and don't worry about mailing me catalogs. Postage will eat you alive, if you're not careful. Try to send announcements about sales, specials, etc. through email whenever possible. :)

And set yourself up with a business email address. Something like MaryKaySarah@yahoo.com or something. Your personal mail inbox will thank you.

Sorry for the length of my comment, but dude... I can't believe I found a source for face blotters! :)

Here's my personal website. http://www.marykay.com/svanderslice/default.aspx

Thank you so much. *boggles along with you that met on a plane!* I feel so much better now.

I'm so sorry you aren't sure about your direct sales business. You might want to hold off on quitting though, just until you see how big a client base you might have in Philly. Or you know, you could always sell Mary Kay with me. :)

Actually, we don't have a quota. We have goals and we win prizes if we meet those goals, but there are no territories or quotas. It was one of the things I liked about it.

Anyway, happy shopping. We have a whole bunch of new cosmetics colors if you'd like to browse. And if you ever change your mind and do want me to do a party for you (absolutely no pressure) then just let me know. :)

And we should definitely get together for lunch or something (just for fun) once you're back in Philly. Talking with you was so much fun and I'd love to do it again.

Ooh, I knew a couple of people who had a lot of success with that and really liked it.

My mom did Mary Kay for a while. She says it was a lot of fun, and she really enjoyed the opportunities and people that she met while doing it. So go Sarah!! I think that you could do well at it for several reasons-
1, you are pretty, and that always helps when you sell makeup,
2, you have a great 'authority' voice, so people will be inclined to listen.
3, the location in KoP is quite good, since it seems women there are more inclined to spend a little on their appearance.
p.s. don't let the haters get you- 'it's a fool who plays it cool by making his world a little colder'.
