They sooooo should have made this!
So I just got my Doctor Who Magazine Series Two Companion in the mail today (I'm American, so I had to order this special). I took a brief break from writing my English essay to scan through the pages. In the Doomsday section there is a blurb about the little "TARDISODES" that they make for the web. The one for Doomsday just has a news woman urging the public to run from the cybermen. Apparently the original script was much different. See below:

An earlier draft of Tardisode 13 was very different. This featured a voice-over from Jackie talking about Rose over a montage of clips of Billie Piper, ending with the Doctor laying flowers at Rose's grave, marked ROSE MARION TYLER, 1987 - 2006. "GATHER THE ROSE OF LOVE WHILST YET IS TIME." Followed by the camera panning to another gravestone reading, JACQUELINE ANDREA SUZETTE TYLER. 1966 - 2006. "FOR THE CHILD IS THE ANCHOR THAT HOLDS A MOTHER TO LIFE."

Seriously, I get why they took it out, because the Doctor understands that Rose is alive. But wow! How beautiful would that little scene have been? And the epitaphs on the graves are just heartbreakingly beautiful. I'd like to believe that the Doctor would have chosen those words for Rose, and the ones for Jackie are so perfect. If you can say anything about that woman, she loves her daughter.

Also, I thought this scene could inspire some great fic, if anyone's interested.

Aw, man. That would have been nice but I'm kind of glad they didn't do that. I think I would have cried my eyes out if I actually saw that on screen.

And write that fic!

I would have cried too, but It would have been worth it to see such a lovely scene. As for the fic, I've got too many bunnies to feed right now as it is. I humbly offer it up for adoption.

o,o and they say there wasn't anything to say that the doctor and rose were more than just good friends...

Right, 'cos we've seen him visiting Jamie's grave and everything. *eyeroll*

Did that early TARDISODE indicate that at some point they'd either considered killing off Rose, or had her saved in some way that the Doctor didn't know she's alive? Yikes!

Now what might've made some sense is having Jack visiting their graves, precisely because he'd have no way to know!

*guiltily admits she's had the Season Two Companion for quite some time, but hasn't read it from cover to cover, an oversight that clearly needs to be rectified*

No, it didn't go into specifics. I think the idea was just to try and trick everyone into thinking she was dead, so that they could surprise us at the end of Doomsday. I'd love to see Jack putting flowers on her grave too though. Another fic that would be great.

Oh, I wish they would've added it. ;__; Those epitaphs are gorgeous. And it probably would've made DD even more unbearable.

P.S. I love what's written on Rose's because it caters to my theory that the Doctor didn't fully appreciate what he had with Rose until she was gone.
svanderslice: DW - 10 sad at wall BWsvanderslice on February 7th, 2008 03:11 am (UTC)
Oh he appreciated her, he was just too scared to act on it. At least that's my theory. Of course, the epitaph could fit with both of our theories. Isn't that the beauty of fandom? :)

That a sad yet beautiful scene. It's true Rose and Jackie are not dead but it's a place he could go to say goodbye without be able to see thee. Plus a place Jack could've gone to since he told the Doctor he stopped in on Rose growing up and found out about her death.

Maybe they cut the scene out because they wanted it to follow from crying at the wall to Rose then to Donna. If they put it before the Doctor and Rose talked by the sea then you'd known that Rose was for sure not coming back. I bet people had hope that the Doctor calling to Rose in her dream meant he found a way back. Then after the scene by the sea there was no room because Donna had to come in and break that moment (his tears). Unless of course they showed the Doctor going to both graves while Rose gave her "this is the story of how I died" it could have worked prefectly then.... Am I over thinking this?

svanderslice: DW - 10/Rose comfortsvanderslice on February 7th, 2008 03:23 am (UTC)
The scene was going to be shot for a "Tardisode," which is a little one minute short shot specifically for the internet. It would not have been included in the episode at all. You can see other Tardisodes on the BBC website, and on youtube. There's a nice one of Mickey calling Rose to come home and investigate DeVry Vale School.

As for overthinking it, isn't that why we're all here?

Thanks so much for putting that up! And I agree, they definitely should have left that in. What a beautiful (and terribly shippy!) thing to put on Rose's gravestone.

You're welcome! And I know, *sigh* It's just the most perfect thing in the universe for the Doctor to put on her gravestone.

I know. *sob!* but wouldn't it have been worth it to read that epitaph and see the look on the Doctor's face? David would have played it brilliantly. It only would have lasted about 58 seconds total anyway.

*sniffles*

DT would have have acting that scene beautifully, no doubt about that and, as others have mentioned, DD would have been ten times difficult to get through with that as a TARDISode.

Thanks for pointing this out! Will have to check whether or not I have this, and if not, I'll definitely consider buying it. :D

I can just see his face, can't you? It would be all dark and broken, his great big brown eyes, damp and luminous. He really is amazing with the sad stuff. *wibbles* I'm so disapointed that they never went through with it.

That would have been so moving to see on screen,I would cry . Just reading it is effective. I cried at Doomsday and still do.
svanderslice: DW - 10 sad at wall BWsvanderslice on February 7th, 2008 01:15 pm (UTC)
Yup, I cry too. Every time.

When I read the little blerb about the TARDISODE that never was, I searched frantically on the internet thinking that maybe I read wrong and they had made it. No such luck though. I really wish they would have.

Thanks so much for posting this. It's always nice to find somewhat canon hidden stories like this.

Of course the dates don't add up... Rose disappeared in 05, came back a year later in 06. Celebrated xmas in 06, stayed a while and left in 07, so Doomsday had to be in 07. Tsk tsk tsk.
Principiaprincipia on February 7th, 2008 08:14 pm (UTC)
I'm sure one of the continuity folks would've pointed that out. Not to mention that Jackie would have been born in 1967, to be turning 40 when Cuba Gooding Jr. would be turning 39.

Oh that is sooo heartbreaking, but reading this, it has brought an idea to mind....

Wouldn't it simply be fabulous if we saw these stones, particularly Rose's, at the beginning of Rose's return episode?
Hotaru's Sisterhotarus_sister on February 7th, 2008 09:43 pm (UTC)
Ot just any scene. I love love love the hidden stuff they throw in (like the SS Rose poster). How awesome if they did a scene in a graveyard and the headstones were just there.
